Release Date: October 8th 2012

Synopsis:
He plays by the rules, she’s not afraid to break them. Now these two strong-willed army captains will prove that opposites attract . . .

A by-the-book captain with a West Point background, Captain Evan Loehr refuses to mix business with pleasure—except for an unguarded instance years ago when he succumbed to the deep sensuality of redheaded beauty Claire Montoya. From that moment on, though, Evan has been at odds with her, through two deployments to Iraq and back again. But when he is asked to train a team prepping for combat alongside Claire, battle-worn Evan is in for the fight of his life.

Strong, gutsy, and loyal, Captain Claire Montoya has worked hard to earn the rank on her chest. In Evan, Claire sees a rigid officer who puts the rules before everything else—including his people. When the mission forces them together, Claire soon discovers that there is more to Evan than meets the eye.

He’s more than the rank on his chest; he’s a man with dark secrets and deep longings. For all their differences, Evan and Claire share two crucial passions: their country and each other.

I'll start this review a little different today. I'm going to focus first on the bad, rather than go on and gush about itfor the first half of my review.

One of the main things that always throws me off about a female protagonist is her unwillingness to accept the fact that she's attracted to the lead male, or to the hottie next door ;) I understand WHY Claire Montoya coudln't for the life of her trust anyone, including Evan, what I couldn't understand was why ther was so much damn hostility! Smh. In the beginning of the book, you feel the tension between these two characters, but by the next time we are reintroduced to the characters years later, there is SO much hostility between them, you are left with one hell of a mindfuck. I began to wonder what caused so much negativity betweetn Claire & Evan that resulted in them being so hostile, and I kept hoping that throughout the book, we'd get a glimpse into their past together to see what changed between them. Unfortunately, this was never explained -.- Which resulted in so much eye rolling on my part that I got whiplash to last me for days. But why couldn't I connect w/ her, besides because of the aformentioned? It was becauase I couldn't sympathize with Claire what had happened to her. By the time I found out why she had so many trust issues, I just didn't care. What's redeeming about Claire is the fact that she's strong, loyal, and she has worked hard to earn her rank as Captain. Always admirable in a woman.

For Captain Evan Loher, following the rules is almost--no, it's as crucial as living. He's use to being in control, but when he meets Claire Montoya, it seems as though she's determined to shatter his control. What I found I just couldn't tolerate about Evan was that no matter how many times Claire blew him off, or how many times she was rude to him, he still kept coming back to her. Plus the hostility. I just couldn't understand what that was all about. I did however, like Evan enough to say that although he's not the strongest Alpha Male heroe I've met, he is a strong man. His personal demons will carry the burden of loss with him until he can finally accept that what happened to him and his family 16years ago was not his fault. I liked his story, but I would have wanted to connect more with him to sympathize better.

Battling their own personal demons, Captain Evan Loher and Captain Claire Montoya must work together to train a team and prepare them for combat. But can they put aside their differences and growing attraction in time before deployment? i believe the secondary characters in Until There Was You got the shorter end of the stick. Although I did like Reza, I didn't quite connect with him or the rest of the characters. If there'll be more on Reza sign me up for the next book ;) I want to know what HIS personal demons keep telling him.

All in all though, the writing style is good and it captivates, I could have read this in one sitting had I not been at work, and if I wasn't such a slow reader xD lol. This is a good read for all contemporary romance novel lovers, and military romance lovers.. cause I mean let's face it, who DOESN'T love a man in uniform ;) Check out book one in the series, Because of You.

Due to sexual content, this book is intended for mature audiences only (18&Over)

  1. I'm w/ u there! I hate heroines who just wouldn't admit their attraction, and the hostility part definitely isn't my thing. I really don't like mean and awful heroines. Also, why would Evan keep going back? Anyway, I've heard good things about the first book and love me some men in uniform, so that's always good!
    Great review, Neyra!

Yeah, I was really put off my Claire's hostility towards Evan, especially cause there was absolutely no reason for her to be hostile w/ him at all! *sigh* Smh, I thought the same thing, I wanted to slap some sense into him, I mean really why go back to someone who's so damn hostile to you? o.O lol oh yeah I love me a man in uniform as well ;) Thank you Ning, I'm actually looking forward to reading Book 1 ^_^
